mini/metro conversion
Hello, Im putting a metro 1275 engine in a mini 1000. I need to know what type of radiator top bracket to use, that fits the thermostat house with sandwich plate. And also what type of thermostat sandwich plate to use to use with the heater. I bought this and they dont seem to fit properly: 12G3512 - http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=33405 12G2453 - http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=36233 Any help would be allot appreciated :)

HELP! engine steady won't fit!!
Are you sure you have the correct type of ultimate engine steady for your model, because I needed the injection type (part "EL59") for my 90' Mainstream (Carb) Mini Cooper due to the thermostat sandwich plate.

sandwich plate
Hey all,
quick query, when a sandwich plate is fitted on a 1275 engine, should the thermostat be fitted in the head as normal, or sat in the top of the sandwich plate. As they both have the same recessed hole for the thermostat, just wondering, not sure if it makes a difference as is the heater take off.

In terms of even cooling of the engine its best to drill out the 1275 head to take heater take off there. The sandwich plate may have a hole drilled in it for a vacuum switch thermostat but anything that will block hole will do.

Head Steady + Radiator Bracket.
I have a standard 1983 998 + stage 1 kit but have fitted a sandwich plate inbetween the thermostat housing and cylider head.
Any thought on which utlimate engine steady I should looking to get?
From what I gather the cooper 1275 1990 - 1992 carb that uses the sandwich plate is wrong because they use a large bore thermostat, so I was thinking the single point injection one but I don't understand what the differrence between the 1275 and the 998 head steady is. Prehaps the 1275's sit higher.
I also need to think about which rad bracket to buy. Same problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Thermostat Housing/Plate on '92 1275
Hi, I ‘m after some advice on parts for the cooling system on my K-Reg (1992) British Open Classic. I know that I have a thermostat housing with a sandwich plate, but I’m unsure which of the components in the minispares catalogue are suitable replacements. The ones I’ve looked at either specify older models without plates, or cooper models. Can anyone help? Regards, Dave.

Heater hoses
Anyone else correct me if i'm wrong, but in a metro there is no bypass in the head (either not drilled out or has a blank plate on it), and the water pump has no bypass.
I think the alternative route for the heater pipe circuit on a metro, rather than the bypass take offs mentioned above, is from a take off on a sandwich plate between the thermostat housing and the cylinder head, runs through the heater, then back through a take off in the pipe that runs from the water pump to the radiator bottom hose.

Good afernoon,
The thermostat should be sat ontop of the sandwich plate. Not too sure on the exact reason for this however.

the strange thing is
you could purchase an mpi housing, if the thread is the same, else the 1990 coopers had a sandwich plate on the thermostat housing that was used for the aux fan, you could try that, but again, it may have a different thread
or the final one, get the original hole drilled and tapped out in the head.

This is the one I've got on my 1990 Mini Cooper (carb model), but mine also has the sandwich plate with the auxilliary electric cooling fan thermostat attachment.

But my temperature gauge sender terminal is in the standard position just below this.

I think its the right one, it came from ebay so im not sure. Its bacsically a big shroud of metal the fits ontop of the thermostat housing, it doesn't have a sandwich plate. the trouble the hole where the rod goes through is directly infron of the top of the breather. Plus i think it will rub slightly on my heater take off pipe. I may hjave to modify the bracket a bit.
My main problem was whether I can transfer the pipe from the carb to going onto the rocker cover take off, rather than from the breather from the tappet chest cover.
thanks,
James

Cylinder head without bypass
Hi all
I have acquired an unleaded head for my 1979 mini. I presume the head is from a metro as there is no bypass. Can I buy a sandwich plate and run some hose from it to the bypass on the water pump? Would this work? If yes then a yes is all I need and if not can you tell me why this wouldn't work. I have asked this question on other mini forums and not gotten a straight answer. It very frustrating. I know my other options are to do away with bypass altogether and drill holes in the thermostat or get a genuine mini head converted to unleaded or just use a lead additive.
Thanks in advance

Unsure about drillig the heater tap take-off on a Metro head. Need help!
Hi, I just bought a metro engine and I'm putting it in a mini 1000.
Has anybody done this? From the article about 'Engine transplants - Ancillary parts' http://www.minispares.com/Article.aspx?aid=305
...
Metros use 5/8” heater pipes so conversion to Mini-type cooling makes things easier, tidier, and more effective. Use the Mini thermostat housing together with a Cooper S top radiator bracket - the thermostat housing angle is different on the BBU - and Cooper S or 1275GT top hose. Drill the heater tap take-off through - the recess is there in Metro heads as are the tapped bolt holes (1/4” UNF thread) to retain the heater tap. Don’t bother plumbing in the inlet manifold if the MG Metro heated type is used - colder intake temperature gives more power! To allow water to circulate prior to the thermostat opening in the absence of a by-pass hose (Metros use a sandwich plate under the thermostat housing) drill 6 1/8” holes around the thermostat’s perimeter.
I am a bit concerned about drilling these holes cos I don't want to 'F%#& up' the engine.
Does any one have a picture or a drawing of where these six 1/8 holes should go. It makes me a bit uneasy to drill these holes. Are they necessary, can I skip them and just drill the heater tap? Does it harm the engine?
BTW! this article is great for those who are doing a mini/metro conversions. And this tread: http://www.miniclassifieds.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=47
